West De Pere presents double trouble at QB

Jack Batten made a list of his team’s 11 best players on offense before its first game.

The West De Pere football coach ended up with two quarterbacks on it.

“Both John Edinger and Josh Blount made the list,” Batten said. “The next question became, how do I get them both on the field? What I decided to do was, they’re both going to be on the field at the same time.”

The decision resulted in the Phantoms being able to make quick work of Shawano during a 42-0 road win last Friday in a Bay Conference game.

With Edinger and Blount alternating between quarterback and split end, West De Pere took a 42-0 lead at the half to force a running clock and finished the game with 358 yards of offense.

Edinger, a junior, was a perfect 4-for-4 in throwing for 26 yards, while Blount, a freshman, rushed for 121 yards on six carries, including four that went for touchdowns.

“Josh did a good job running the football, and John did a good job passing the football,” said Batten, whose team hosts New London in its home-opener Friday. “In future games, those roles might be reversed, but so far so good.”

Senior running back Austin Beaumier rushed for a game-high 152 yards and was the main focus of the Shawano defense, according to Batten. That opened up the outside for the freshman to have a big day.

“There are tons of things he has to get better at,” Batten said of Blount. “He knows that, but it was a pretty good start.

“His measurables aren’t freshman-like. He can bench 220 pounds. He can clean 220 pounds. He runs a 4.7 40 (yard dash). Those are not freshman-like numbers. He’s 175 pounds, so if you walk in the weight room he certainly doesn’t look like a freshman.”
