MADISON – The Green Bay area produced 29 medalists from its 44 qualifiers at the WIAA individual state tournament this year.

Local wrestlers went 7-4 in state championship matches.

Ashwaubenon’s Cody Minor (113) and Bay Port’s Max Meeuwsen (285) became the area’s first D1 state champions since 2015.

Oconto Falls freshman Clayton Whiting (152) and Luxemburg-Casco senior Reece Worachek (170) won titles in D2, while the Coleman trio of seniors Koltin Grzybowski (113), Caleb Gross (126) and Jake Baldwin (145) winning titles in D3.

Five of the third-place finishers from the consolation bracket in the area were seniors, including four seniors in Luxemburg-Casco’s Colton Worachek (D2-160 pounds), Denmark’s T.J. Weidman (D2-220), Coleman’s Brock Martinson (D3-285) and Green Bay United’s Isaac Klarkowski (D1-285).

“It’s my last year,” Weidman said. “I can’t lose. My main goal was to not lose my last match ever.”

Worachek obtained his highest finish on the podium in his third state appearance.

“I’ve been ranked pretty low all year,” Worachek said. “So, to come in here and take third feels pretty good because I did better than what everybody thought I was going to do.”

Klarkowski won his third-place match with a takedown to secure a sudden victory win for the highest placement by a wrestler from the Green Bay co-op team in recent years.

Wrightstown sophomore Kaiden Koltz accounted for the other third-place finish, defeating Luxemburg-Casco junior Lucas Joniaux in a third-place match between local competitors.
