Roll call: Green Bay area state track and field qualifiers
Advancing to the WIAA state track and field meet is a great accomplishment for any competitor.
It’s extra special for those that had to wait to find out they made it.
The Green Bay area produced extra state qualifiers in six events.
An extra qualifier is awarded if a top eight mark among all of a division’s sectionals is accomplished.
There were two extra qualifiers from the 800-meter boys run at the Division 1 Ashwaubenon sectional, as De Pere junior Andrew Lopez and Ashwaubenon senior Randy Johnson both made it.
Johnson will join his younger brother, Nick, a junior, who finished third at sectionals to secure his state trip.
The Green Bay Preble boys 3,200 relay had the state’s fastest time entering sectionals, but needed the extra qualifier to make it to state, where it will be seeded fifth.
Ashwaubenon junior Dan Huhtala (boys pole vault) and Bay Port sophomore Ella Meeuwsen (girls high jump) also made it as extra qualifiers in Division 1.
Meanwhile, Kewaunee junior Tanor Bortolini made it as an extra qualifier for the boys shot put in Division 2, giving the Storm three state qualifiers after the team won the program’s first WIAA regional title since 1987.
