G.B. East focuses on the big picture

Kaleb Timm had quite a night last week.

The Green Bay East senior hauled in eight receptions for 238 yards and two touchdowns against New London in a Bay Conference game.

It’s not only the most receiving yards Brian Nast has seen one of his players produce in a single game in his 11 years as head coach at East, Nast believes Timm’s performance is also a school record based on the data he inherited.

The early years of the Red Devils’ record book can be a bit fuzzy, but that tends to be the case when a program has such a storied history and features a rivalry with a crosstown rivalry dating back to 1905.

East will be aiming to win at West when the squads meet for the 112th time tonight.

Nast looks forward to the East-West game each year and would be lying if he said it didn’t mean a little more than all the other games on the schedule every season.

However, the veteran coach looks forward to his players embracing the big picture of what the sport means even more.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Nast said. “It’s about teaching these guys to be good people and be good and respectful members of society.

“We have a lot of players on this team that have that selflessness of putting themselves back so other people can be forward. I think that’s what makes us have such good chemistry as a team. It might not show up in the ‘W’ column always, but it shows up when these kids are at school or practice or how they rally behind someone when they get hurt. They’re all one. That’s pretty special.”

Seth Zellner and Kaleb Timm

Timm didn’t want any attention for his special performance last week, which was the second most receiving yards by a player from the Green Bay area this season. The 6-foot receiver politely declined an interview request.

What happened later in the night following his big game defined him and his team more than any stat line or win could.

Timm stayed up late into the evening along with his teammates to greet junior fullback Seth Zellner when he returned home.

Zellner had to go to the hospital after the game against New London, which he finished playing with a broken hand.

Zellner didn’t want to be a distraction from Timm’s big night. Timm didn’t want to celebrate what he felt was a team accomplishment without Zellner by his side.

“That’s a close bond a lot of our players have,” Nast said.

“This group isn’t about personal accolades. They like to work as a team. Kaleb would be the first one say it was Koda (Kinjerski) throwing him good passes, and Koda would be the first one to stay it was the line giving him protection and the line would say Kaleb did a great job of running his routes. That kind of thing is really cool to see.”

G.B. East energized by new turf

Nast is looking forward to seeing his team at its best tonight at West.

“The great thing with West is they will play their best and their hardest against us,” Nast said. “We know that. This is just as big of a game for them that it is for us. We know we’re going to get their best. We’re going to give them our best.”
