Lane Cochart knew he wasn’t going to be able to raise his right arm Friday to help the Algoma football team.

The senior quarterback instead found other ways to lift the Wolves.

Cochart used his feet to score a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and then his instincts to intercept a 2-point conversion attempt as Algoma rallied for a 30-28 victory over Sevastopol in a thrilling Across The Bay Conference game at Perry Field.

“Winning at home is always a good feeling, especially coming off a loss,” Cochart said.

It was definitely a different feeling for Cochart to be on the sidelines when Algoma was on offense Friday against the Pioneers.

The 6-foot-2, 187-pounder sprained the AC joint in his right shoulder during a loss at N.E.W. Lutheran/Oneida Nation last week.

Cochart could play inside linebacker like normal against Sevastopol, but was relegated to the sideline on offense as senior Parker Lischka stepped in under center.

Lischka, who is normally Cochart’s top target at receiver, put together a strong outing taking snaps, rushing for a touchdown and throwing for a pair of scores to junior Cayden Neuzil and senior Aiden Moen.

Moen’s 47-yard touchdown reception on the first play of the fourth quarter, and Lischka’s 2-point conversion run that followed, allowed the Wolves to tie the game at 22-22.

Algoma’s defense then came away with a clutch fourth-down stop deep in its own territory, as junior Pete Ritchie stood up the Sevastopol ball carrier at the line of scrimmage.

What followed was a 13-play, 74-yard scoring drive capped by a 1-yard run by Cochart, who entered at quarterback for the first time earlier in the possession.

“You could tell Parker was getting a little gassed with running consistently,” Algoma coach Wade Vandervest said. “With Lane, it was like, can you give us a couple plays on offense to get the positive yards that we need to keep moving those chains.”

The drive took 5 minutes, 39 seconds off the clock and consisted of all runs. Lischka rushed in the 2-point conversion attempt for what turned out to be the deciding points with 2:05 remaining.

The Pioneers responded quickly, though, to score a touchdown with 37 remaining. However, Cochart stepped in front of the pass on the potential game-tying 2-point attempt.

“It was definitely a statement pounding the rock like that,” Cochart said about his team’s go-ahead touchdown drive.

Along with Lishcka, senior Joey Cabino got a lot of work on the ground Friday and also came up with an interception.

Algoma (4-2) plays at Gillett next week before closing out its season at home against Suring.

Coming into the season Vandervest knew he had a lot of experience among his perimeter players, and he’s been pleased with the improvement among his younger interior linemen.

“It’s a good, quality win for our guys,” Vandervest said. “It’s a matter of can we just keep improving, keep improving, keep improving so we can take those next steps.”

No player on the Luxemburg-Casco football team was more ready for the season to begin than Mason Trimberger.

The 6-foot-3, 170-pounder came out of the gates with a 43-yard reception on the first play from scrimmage last week to help set up an opening-drive score for the Spartans.

The senior captain brought in another big catch on the ensuing possession when he hauled in a 27-yard scoring strike from junior Eli Derenne on fourth-and-7 for what turned out to be the deciding points in a 13-6 nonconference victory over Seymour.

"Very excited to be out here back again," said Trimberger, who made four receptions for 97 yards.

They were his first catches since almost a year ago when he caught a quick screen and broke the fibula in his left leg in a Week 2 loss against Appleton Xavier.

"You get pruned back sometimes and you grow back a little bit stronger because of it," L-C football coach Neil Seering said. "He's making the most of his opportunities."

After missing most of last football season, and all of his junior year of basketball, Trimberger is making up for lost time to say the least.

Trimberger felt like his dynamic and explosive self again towards the end of spring, when he made a marvelous run to qualify for the WIAA state track and field meet in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

It's an accomplishment he wouldn't have been able to do without L-C strength coach Cole Letter pushing him during rehab workouts in winter to strengthen his trail leg again.

Following last year's setback, the only thing Trimberger is hoping to break as a senior is a school record in at least one of the hurdle events.

"I think they are within reach," said Seering, who is also L-C's track and field coach. "He's going to have to come down a little bit, but last year he didn't come back until early spring because he was rehabbing all through winter. If there is anybody who can do it, it would be him."

Trimberger's athleticism and work ethic earned him a role playing cornerback on the football team as a sophomore when the Spartans finished as the WIAA Division 4 state runners-up.

While he couldn't physically contribute for most of last season, he still managed to contribute and grow as a player through film study.

"He gets along with everybody," Seering said. "He's a good-natured kid. I'm glad he worked hard to get back to where he is because he's earned it, and I'm very happy for him. He's just a great kid to coach. He's a good leader, and a good human being for our program."

Besides his natural athleticism, Trimberger's greatest gift might be his foresight in seeing what really matters most.

"I want to go into fire science," said Trimberger, who wants to become a firefighter. "I want to use my athleticism outside of high school to help people."

Seering added, "He's a person that cares about people. He's a thoughtful young man. If he wants to do something for the good of humanity and our communities, he would be a great guy to do that."

The butterflies in Tanor Bortolini’s stomach felt huge as he got ready to bend down into position.

The 6-foot-4, 303-pounder had prepared a while for this moment and was able to execute a perfect exchange.

The account above could be used to describe the center’s first snap in the NFL last year with the Indianapolis Colts.

However, this moment took place in March, when he got down on one knee to present a ring to his fiancé, Sydney, during a vacation in Jamaica.

“They both have their stresses,” Bortolini said about preparing for an NFL season and a wedding.

“Planning a wedding is actually significantly more work than I thought it would be. I thought it would be easy, and we got about an hour in, and I realized this is going to take a lot longer than I initially thought. But it has been a lot of fun and I’m excited about it.”

Following a solid rookie campaign, Bortolini is excited about the position he’s in entering his second NFL season.

The Kewaunee native is competing to be the Colts’ starting center when the regular season begins. His next test to prove himself comes Saturday when Indianapolis hosts the Green Bay Packers in a preseason game.

“I’m fine tuning those things I know I need to work on,” Bortolini said in June after hosting a linemen camp for local youth and high school players in his hometown.

“I’m feeling very confident that I’m playing at a level, where I’m doing everything I need to do at a high level to go out there and compete and win that starting job.”

Last season was obviously a big adjustment for the former University of Wisconsin lineman.

After being selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Bortolini found out that playing center in the pros can feel at times like being on an island – and not the fun kind with a resort that he proposed on.

The scheme the Colts run under head coach Shane Steichen calls for a lot of responsibility on the center position to make pre-snap reads and direct traffic. It was far more complex than what he experienced in his final year with the Badgers.

Obviously, there are elite athletes everywhere on the field that you’re going up against to contend with as well.

That was evident during a training camp practice last year when Bortolini went up against veteran defensive tackle DeForest Buckner in a pass-pro drill.

“I got beat probably worse than I had been in four or five years,” Bortolini recalls. “I was like, ‘Wow, OK. That can happen.’ You can get beat at any given time, but you have to go back to fundamentals. Buck was a good guy to help me learn what I need to do to improve.”

Given the physical nature of football, particularly in the trenches, injuries are going to happen.

The end of Bortolini’s first training camp got cut short due to a leg injury.

The ailment kept him sidelined for the first three games of the 2024 season, including a contest against the Packers at Lambeau Field, where he had first gained a love for the game as a spectator rooting on the green and gold.

As tough as it was to not be suited up then, the setback ultimately allowed Bortolini to soak in the mental aspects of the game and helped him have strong showings when his No. 60 was called to start five times when Ryan Kelly was injured.

“Everything happens for a reason,” Bortolini said about missing time early with an injury.

“I couldn’t ask for a better situation. I got one year to kind of figure everything out. When you get in the NFL there is a big jump – talent-wise and playbook-wise. Figuring out what I had to do on a week-to-week basis to get myself ready. I’m feeling a lot more confident heading into Year 2 than I was Year 1. I think they’re expecting me to step up to take on a bigger role, and I feel more than ready for that.

The door for Bortolini to earn a starting spot this season opened when Kelly signed with the Minnesota Vikings in free agency.

While most of his film study these days is accessing his own play and upcoming opponents, Bortolini will once again plan to squeeze time in to review another team wearing purple.

His brother, Blake, will be a junior for Kewaunee’s football team and entering his second year as the starting center for the varsity squad.

“They are young, and they are still figuring it all out,” Bortolini said about Kewaunee’s offensive line. “For a lot of those guys, it was their first time ever playing varsity football last year, so there is always going to be a learning curve to it.

“They are getting better. The coolest thing that I’m excited for with that group with one year under their belt I feel like this year they will really take another step forward and keep excelling.”

Bortolini may have felt like a small fish in a big pond making the transition to the NFL last year.

Despite a lot of adjustments, he still was able to find some new fishing spots in Indiana. Although none can compare to his favorites along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Kewaunee County.

“I couldn’t ask for a better situation,” Bortolini said about being selected by the Colts last year.

“It’s perfect location wise. It’s only a six-hour drive from Kewaunee to Indianapolis. The best part is it’s not extremely hard for my parents to get to games.”

The importance of family was stressed to Bortolini when he spoke on the phone with Colts owner Jim Irsay after being drafted.

Irsay passed away in May, and the team will wear badges with his initials this season.

“Its’s really important for us,” Bortolini said about helping Indianapolis return to the playoffs. “More than anything, he wanted to see this team win. He was one to do whatever it took to get the Colts to that point. We’re playing this year out in honor of him and in honor of all that he stood for and what he did for the community.”

ALGOMA – Wade Vandervest’s 10-year-old shirt was soaking wet by the end of Thursday night.

His players made sure of that by ending a 10-year drought.

The Algoma football team rallied for a 22-20 victory over previously unbeaten Lena/Marinette St. Thomas at Perry Field to claim the Across The Bay Conference title.

It's the Wolves’ first conference championship since 2014.

After getting a bucket of water dumped on him, Vandervest put that time period into perspective for his squad when he removed his drenched Algoma polo to reveal a 2014 conference title t-shirt he had been wearing underneath. He let his team know he’s going to be happy to get a new shirt to add to his wardrobe for the efforts of this year’s team.

“It means a lot,” senior lineman Carson Leist said. “We knew this was going to be our final game, and we just put everything out there that we could.”

Despite missing two of its best players due to injury, seniors Isaac Yunk and John Kirchman, Algoma (7-1, 6-0) still found a way to pick up the program’s biggest win since transitioning to 8-player football in 2019.

The victory marks the first time the Wolves beat Lena/Marinette St. Thomas (7-1, 5-1) since the two squads joined the same conference.

The Titans were ranked No. 4 in the state for the 8-player division. They came out looking like a powerhouse program in taking a 14-0 lead before Algoma’s offense even got a chance to take its first snap of the game thanks to an onside kick after scoring on the opening drive.

“It’s one of those where you think in the back of your mind, ‘Are we going to get steamrolled?’ kind of a situation because everything was going wrong for us,” said Vandervest, whose team also lost a fumble trailing 14-0. “In that situation, we just had to go one play at a time because you can’t get it all back in one play.”

The Wolves defense locked in after that, forcing three turnovers and limiting a Lena/Marinette St. Thomas team that had been averaging 37 points per game to just 6 over the final three quarters of play.

Meanwhile, Algoma’s offense got some big strikes against a Titans defense that had allowed just 34 points all season coming into the contest.

Vandervest credits the tough lessons learned from a season-opening loss at N.E.W. Lutheran/Oneida Nation in triple overtime to pulling out the close victory Thursday.

“They were in a position they hadn’t been in all year, and we were able to come out on top,” Vandervest said.

The tide turned in the Wolves’ favor when Leist and senior Logan Wilson forced a fumble that was recovered by junior Parker Lischka in the first quarter.

A few plays later, junior Lance Cochart and senior Wyatt Fay connected for a 79-yard scoring strike.

Fay would halt the Titan’s next drive with an interception, and Algoma almost tied the game before the half when they drove deep into Lena/Marinette St. Thomas territory.

The Wolves marched down the field on the opening drive of the second half and tied the game at 14-14 with a Cochart touchdown on a 1-yard sneak and then another run by the quarterback on a successful 2-point conversion.

The Titans answered with a scoring drive of their own to take a 20-14 lead midway through the third quarter and before forcing Algoma to punt on its next possession.

That’s when momentum turned in the Wolves’ favor for good when sophomore Cayden Neuzil recovered a fumble with 1 minute, 46 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Cochart found Lischka for a big gain on the ensuing drive to move into Titans’ territory.

Following a seven-yard loss on third-and-goal, the combination of Cochart and Lischka connected again for a 10-yard touchdown on fourth down and a successful 2-point conversion to give Algoma its first lead with 7:42 remaining in the game.

“Someone had to step up,” Lischka said. “They called my number, and I pretty much told coach to run the play.”

Junior Joey Cabino came up with the tackle to force a turnover on downs at the Algoma 30 with less than 2 minutes remaining to help secure the conference title.

Since transitioning to 8-player football in 2019, the Wolves have been ineligible for WIAA postseason play due to having a three-year enrollment average above 200 students.

It created a unique circumstance for Algoma’s 10 seniors to end their careers with a win and conference title in their final game.

To put that into perspective, a majority of conference champions in the state will have their seasons end with a loss at some point in the playoffs. The exceptions are those few teams that run the table in the postseason to win a state championship.

Algoma’s 10 seniors this year were: Wyatt Fay, Hunter O’Hearn, Mark Vera, Isaac Yunk, Tyler Challis, Damian Nolasco, Gavin Bielawski, John Kirchman, Logan Wilson, and Carson Leist.

“I’m proud of this team,” Vandervest said. “Every season is unique and has its own peaks and valleys. We were able to find different guys to fit their roles and get it done.”

INSTITUTE – The sprinklers turned on along the Algoma football team’s sideline Friday night as its players were packing up to head home.

It’s the only thing that could have cooled off this red-hot team.

The Wolves forced four turnovers in the second half and fired off several big plays to light up the scoreboard in a 36-6 victory to spoil Sevastopol’s homecoming in an Across the Bay Conference game.

Algoma shined brighter than the bomb fire burning near the field during the contest, which was a scoreless slugfest until the final play of the first half when junior Joey Cabino scored a 4-yard touchdown.

Juniors Lane Cochart and Parker Lischka then connected on the 2-point conversion to put the Wolves up 8-0.

“I thought as a team we had a slow start to the first half, but when it started to get more emotional we picked it up and we secured the score that you see right now,” senior lineman John Kirchman said.

The victory keeps Algoma’s hopes of securing a conference title alive and comes a week after seeing one of its best players, senior Isaac Yunk, sustain a torn ACL to one of his knees.

“Each season has its own unique aspects to it,” said Algoma head coach Wade Vandervest, whose team has won four straight since a triple overtime loss in the opener. “We’ve had some adversity, and we’ve had to figure out how to overcome that adversity.”

The flurry of points in the second half was sparked by the defense, as it produced a fumble recovery by junior Aiden Moen to stop Sevastopol at the Wolves’ 11-yard line on the opening drive of the second half.

A couple plays later Cochart found Lischka for a 64-yard scoring strike, extending the lead to 16-0 with Cochart completing the 2-point conversion pass to senior Wyatt Fay.

Fay followed it up by recovering a fumble forced by Moen on the ensuing Pioneers’ possession. Fay then made a nice catch off a slant to move the chains before ultimately catching a 35-yard touchdown from Lischka on a double pass at the start of the fourth quarter.

Lischka caught the 2-point conversion pass from Cochart to push the lead to 24-0.

“We just work our interior and then we can get those big plays to the outside,” Vandervest said. “That’s what we’re trying to do is get those big plays to the outside and trying different ways to do it.”

Cabino made an interception later in the fourth quarter to halt Sevastopol’s momentum after it scored on a long run and getting a stop.

Cochart would add a 6-yard touchdown off the turnover. Algoma’s final turnover and score came on an interception return by sophomore Cooper Fay.

“You need the kids to buy in,” Vandervest said. “It’s a credit to them for doing all the little things.”

The Wolves will host Gillett in their homecoming game next Friday. Algoma then travels to Suring on Oct. 11 before closing out its season by hosting undefeated Lena/Marinette St. Thomas on Oct. 17.

The season finale not only could shape up to be for the conference title, but potentially also could be the last home game at Perry Field as there have been discussions about moving home games to the field by the school in upcoming years.

The only certainty as this point is that the Wolves’ final game this year will be at the end of the regular season, as they’re unable to qualify for the WIAA’s 8-player playoffs since the school’s three-enrollment average remains just over 200.

“We can’t make it, but the big thing is what can we do as football players to get better overall? That’s the goal,” Vandervest said.

“I just want to make sure we’re improving. By the time you step on that field as a freshman from the time you step off that field as a senior, are you making a good progression? That’s where our focus is.”

Mitchell Boeder is putting on some miles this year.

The Kewaunee junior’s latest travels saw him go about 1,100 miles in three days for three different football games.

The 20 hours spent in vehicles during the trek is just part of the recruiting trail for the standout lineman.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pounder is a sought-after talent by college squads in part because of the natural size he possesses.

However, it’s the little aspects of his game that will ultimately determine his long-term success.

“He’s got those good, physical gifts” Kewaunee football coach Randy Charles said. “We all know that. That’s no secret. That’s why he’s getting looks. But he’s starting to understand that he’s the old guy on the line right now, and there were some instances where he started stepping out of his comfort zone and showing some of those leadership qualities and helping those young guys along.

“I know it is not easy for him because he’s a quiet kid. That’s exciting to see that because that’s a big thing I know we’re going to need.”

Boeder is the lone returning starter on the Storm’s offensive line this season. He’s made a rather seamless transition from left tackle to right tackle to protect the blindside of junior quarterback Brett Paulsen, who is a lefty.

Following a nonconference game at Neaguanee, Mich., last week, Boeder headed south to Madison where he was invited to watch the Badgers’ season-opening game. From there, he headed to Cedar Falls to take in Northern Iowa University’s season-opening game last Saturday.

It's all part of the process of being Kewaunee’s next big lineman on the recruiting trail, as he's following in the big footsteps of Braxton Riha and Tanor Bortolini.

“When you see a guy that size you get excited because you know he has the potential and that he’s seen the path,” Charles said. “That’s a challenge for a lot of guys to keep making it up to higher and higher levels of football. Everyone knows it’s there, but the path to get there is not easy.”

Boeder’s athleticism allows him to make things look easy at times.

The three-sport athlete earned second team all-Packerland Conference honors in football last year, advanced to the WIAA individual state wrestling tournament, and came up just short of qualifying for state in track and field after a driving downpour contributed to him scratching on his discus throw attempts at sectionals.

To top it off, Boeder filled in for a summer league basketball tournament in Sturgeon Bay when his friends were a player short.

Simply put, Boeder is happy to step up when needed, which is why he didn’t mind tackling the long-snapping duties this year as well.

“We have a lot of young guys,” Kewaunee senior running back Jackson Wisnicky said. “So, it’s a sigh of relief to look over to the right and see that 6-foot-5 mammoth is just comforting.”

You could say Boeder is comfortable with life on the road since he’s traveled from coast to coast to show cattle with his family for as long as he can remember, including stops on both coasts, from Oregon to Massachusetts.

His upbringing on a farm gives him a natural toughness and work ethic. Those attributes led to opportunities earlier this year to camp invites for several NCAA Division I programs.

Still, the toughest workouts he went through were his preseason football practices at Kewaunee since he no longer had his older brother, Matthew, by his side on the line anymore.

In taking on a leadership role on the team, Boeder is getting out of his comfort zone by having to speak up more.

“At the start it was a bit rough,” Boeder said. “It was hard transitioning from last year’s line to this year’s. But I think we’re going to do pretty good.

“Communicating. That’s the biggest part right now. If we keep doing that, we’re going to be fine.”

Kewaunee (1-1) opens up Packerland Conference play Friday night by hosting Oconto.

Elsewhere in the county, Luxemburg-Casco (0-2) looks to record its first victory when it visits rival Denmark for a North Eastern Conference showdown.

Meanwhile, Algoma (0-1) travels to Fish Creek for an Across the Bay Conference game at Gibraltar. The Wolves are looking to bounce back following a triple overtime loss at N.E.W. Lutheran/Oneida Nation last week.

KEWAUNEE – Every football team gets a fresh start this time of year.

Kewaunee enjoyed getting off to a fast one as well.

The Storm took advantage of great field position early in recording a 34-14 victory over Racine Lutheran in a nonconference game Friday at Don Rabas Field.

“We had a lot of young guys in there that were willing to step up to the challenge,” Kewaunee coach Randy Charles said.

“We had a nice, hot start. We made some mistakes, especially as things went on early in the second half. We made some mistakes we didn’t make in the first half, but I think that’s things you’re going to have with a young team and the growing pains we have to go through. But they found a way to stop that negative momentum and getting it back going when they needed to.”

5-yard run by senior Jackson Wisnicky early in the third quarter to push the lead to 34-0

It was the kind of start Kewaunee was looking for in replacing 15 seniors that helped the program advance to WIAA state semifinal games in back-to-back seasons.

“It's really great to see these young guys grow and just the tip of the iceberg of what they can do,” said Wisnicky, who also scored on a 49-yard scamper in the second quarter for the longest play from scrimmage of the night. “I’m really excited to help them grow and continue the legacy of Kewaunee football.”

The first 17 minutes of Friday’s game were played in Racine Lutheran territory as Kewaunee benefited from a kickoff placed inside the 5, a short punt returned inside the 10, and an interception by junior Trevor Gauthier to build a 15-0 lead by the time Racine Lutheran was able to get off a snap on the Storm’s side of the field.

Gauthier opened the scoring by catching a touchdown on fourth-and-7 from fellow junior Brett Paulsen to cap the Storm’s first series of the season.

Senior Tyler VanGoethem added a one-yard plunge on third-and-goal on the next drive. The bounces continued to go in Kewaunee’s favor when the extra-point attempt went array and Paulsen was still able to find Wisnicky for a 2-point conversion to push the lead to 15-0.

The first half ended with Paulsen improvising again to beat the clock in scrambling for a score on the final play before halftime to extend the lead to 28-0.

“I’m definitely proud to see the guys that were given some opportunities step up,” Charles said. “We took advantage of some opportunities early. That got us up. We definitely got a lot of learning and growing to do yet, but we’ll take it and go from here.”

Kewaunee heads north – like way up north – for its next nonconference game Thursday, Aug. 29, at Negaunee in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula before opening Packerland Conference play by hosting Oconto on Sept. 6.

Fast forward 12 years and Bortolini is still just as excited to play football as he was during his first equipment handout day at the old Hillcrest grade school back in his hometown.

The 6-foot-4, 303-pounder has put in the work over that time to ultimately climb his way to becoming one of the top prospects at his position in this year’s NFL Draft class.

The only uncertainty the interior offensive lineman faces at this point is finding out where he’s going to be strapping on a helmet and shoulder pads next.

“I think it will be really cool – a surreal moment – where finally you realize I’m going to be in the NFL,” Bortolini said. “I’m really achieving this dream. I think it’s going to be a great moment, and I’m going to be really excited to get to work wherever I end up.”

The 21-year-old lineman has become a virtual lock to hear his name called at some point during the NFL Draft, which takes place April 25-27. Most draft analysts project Bortolini to go Saturday in the fourth round.

But it wouldn’t surprise anyone if the former University of Wisconsin offensive lineman gets selected Friday given his strong performances at the Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine.

The latter skyrocketed his stock among draft pundits across the nation. His 40-yard dash time of 4.94 seconds was second among offensive linemen and his three-cone drill time of 7.16 seconds broke a combine record for an offensive lineman that was previously held by Jason Kelce, who recently retired as an all-pro center for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bortolini’s power, mobility and versatility comes as no surprise to those that were around him as a young athlete, when he competed in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field during his high school years.

“He's a big offensive lineman, but he’s always had that athletic ability to move out in space,” Kewaunee head football coach Randy Charles said.

“When the big boys have the ability to get out of the trenches and do some things in space, he was definitely the kind of kid that ate that up. Hence his longing to always want to be tight end. He was always pestering us for that, and I know he was doing the same thing down there playing for the Badgers.”

Bortolini is carrying on the strong tradition the Badgers have established of producing offensive linemen for the pros.

After starting 28 games and playing four different positions along the offensive line in college, he’ll be the 25th lineman from UW since 2000 to be selected in the NFL Draft. Fifteen of them went within the first three rounds.

His versatility and willingness to do whatever he could to help the team even got him some time at tight end in Madison.

Bortolini didn’t have to look far to find some role models at that position.

Inside one of the trophy cases at Kewaunee High School is a display featuring two alums who went on to play in the NFL as tight ends: Jack Novak and Colin Cochart.

After playing at Wisconsin, Novak was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 12th round of the 1975 NFL Draft and played two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coming out of South Dakota State, Cochart made the Bengals’ roster in 2011 as an undrafted free agent and also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys.

Bortolini grew up close to Novak and can recall receiving a few pointers here and there as a kid from the long-time assistant football coach at Kewaunee.

Hanging in his childhood bedroom was a signed photo of Cochart, who Bortolini met in fourth grade when the former all-state tight end returned to his alma mater to speak during the Bengals’ bye week.

“To, hopefully, be in the same trophy case as both of those guys would be pretty cool,” said Bortolini, who would become the fourth Kewaunee native to play in the NFL, joining Novak, Cochart and Stan Kuick (1926).

“If you put the work, time and effort in you can get there. I think that’s the really cool part about being able to see Colin do that from a young age. I think early on I had that mindset that it would be possible.”

Another tight end that made an impression on Bortolini as a kid was Mike Lux, who as a senior in 2010 led Kewaunee to its first WIAA state title in any sport.

Bortolini recalls watching the all-state tight end from Kewaunee’s press box, where his maternal grandfather, Glenn Teske, was the public-address announcer for football games.

The oldest of three kids, Bortolini always had sports in his life. Both of his parents, Teresa and Scott, competed in college athletics.

His mom played basketball at UW-Milwaukee after setting Kewaunee’s scoring record, which stood for 28 years. His dad played baseball at Lakeland College.

They coached at various levels from youth to high school, so there was always a gym key in the Bortolini household. Tanor always had a goal in mind as well.

“He straight up told me as a seventh-grader, ‘I’m going to play for the Badgers one day and I’m going to play in the NFL.’ I’m like, OK, let’s gets to work,” said Casey Christian, one of Bortolini’s coaches in football and track & field. “That was my first interaction with him.

“He hasn’t changed one bit. He’s still that small-town kid. The big lights haven’t affected him by any means.”

Bortolini made an immediate impact on the Kewaunee varsity football team, earning a starting spot at left tackle as a freshman.

“Just based on his size and athletic ability, we knew we were going to have something special,” Charles said. “You typically don’t get kids that come in as a freshman and start making an impact right away.”

Bortolini led Kewaunee to back-to-back Packerland Conference titles as an upperclassman. He was named conference offensive and defensive lineman of the year twice in addition to earning first-team all-state accolades on offense by both The Associated Press and Wisconsin Football Coaches Association his senior year in 2019.

His biggest performances, however, came in pair of games in 2018 against rival Southern Door, which featured in its backfield Derik LeCaptain, an all-state performer and current linebacker for the University of Minnesota.

Kewaunee’s strategy to try to contain LeCaptain was to have Bortolini mirror him wherever the standout running back went. It was two alphas matching up and a classic case of iron sharpening iron.

“It didn’t matter if Derik split out to receiver, we had Tanor running out from being a D-end going basically to play corner in the slot,” Christian said. “It always amazed me how this kid was a giant but so athletic that we could move him from defensive end to go play corner against one of the best players in the state and lock him up.”

By the spring of his junior year Bortolini received several NCAA Division I scholarship offers, including from Ivy League schools since he scored a 30 on his ACT. He didn’t take long to accept Wisconsin’s when it came along.

While being heavily recruited he also managed to advance to the WIAA state track & field championships and place fourth in the Division 2 shot put. He reached the podium with a personal-best throw of 51 feet, 5 inches with his final attempt.

Bortolini never got a chance to try to win the D2 state title the following year due to the COVID-19 pandemic canceling his senior season.

“If we would have had a meet his senior year, I’m sure he would have broke the school record in the shot put because he was only a couple feet away as a junior,” said Kewaunee head track & field coach Joe Kassner, who also coached Bortolini in football.

“He’s a very humble kid. You can tell he grew up with good parents and is one that doesn’t take anything for granted.”

Bortolini’s college career actually started in his parents’ basement, where a makeshift weight room was made in 2020 so he could start the Badgers’ strength training program during the pandemic’s lockdown phase.

“The squat rack was built out of 2x4’s,” Bortolini said. “It was different. It was a different time for training, but I’m really thankful that I had that chance to really get after it before enrolling in college. It put me in a position to succeed.”

The Badgers then basically put him at every position along the offensive line, including both guard spots, right tackle and center.

In 2022, he was named honorable mention all-Big Ten after allowing just one sack over 10 starts. That season saw UW make a change by letting go of head coach Paul Chryst in the middle of the season.

New Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell came to Madison last season with a new offense under the direction of coordinator Phil Longo. Needless to say, the spread attack was a drastic change from the tight splits and formations the Badgers had become known for as a ground-and-pound team.

Ultimately, the change benefited Bortolini and his prospects of going pro, as he finally found a consistent home as the team’s starting center. In an offense that operated almost exclusively with shotgun snaps, it allowed him to face and rise up to a new challenge.

“Not every team runs the same scheme, and I have experience running a variety of them,” said Bortolini, who was named third team all-Big Ten in 2023. “They were two polar opposite (offenses). There is no right or wrong way to run an offense. It’s just your preference. This year we were more of an air raid, air-it-out offense. It’s a little different than the typical power run that people are used to seeing Wisconsin do, but as an offensive lineman it’s pretty cool because you get to showcase that you are athletic and can move in space, and I think it made me more well-rounded as a player.”

In preparing for his NFL future, Bortolini spent close to three months over the winter living and training in Dallas, where offensive line guru and trainer Duke Manyweather is located.

The workout sessions with other top linemen propelled Bortolini to excel at the Senior Bowl in Birmingham on Feb. 3 and at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on March 3.

From there it was the Badgers’ Pro Day and visits to several NFL teams, including the Green Bay Packers.

But traveling to bigger cities and having ESPN pundits like draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. praise his talent and pro potential hasn’t changed Bortolini and his small-town roots.

“He's definitely Kewaunee, Northeast Wisconsin, through and through,” Charles said. “He’s still very grounded. He never let any of the attention get to his head, which is good to see. That speaks volumes to his character. His character and how he conducts his business on and off the field is something we’re definitely proud of saying that came through our program.

“He's a good representation of the best of who we are. I think the athletic ability puts it on display for a larger audience or larger group of people to see a kid of good character doing things the right way. To me, to say this is an NFL player that we’ve had come through our program is cool, but I think as a coach I’m more proud of who he is as a man, even more so than what his athletic ability has got him to.”

Bortolini has come a long way since being the fifth-grader that didn’t know how to put his equipment on.

“Every time I see him it’s always going to be that fifth-grade kid that came walking through with his helmet and shoulder pads on backwards,” Kinjerski said. “Tanor is just the best. He’s a blue-collar kid from a small town. He’s flannel wearing; he’s Kewaunee. He represents his roots well. His parents raised him the right way. He turned out to be a very good man. He just has to remember our bargain. I told him in sixth grade that once he makes the league, he only owes me one thing and that’s a pair of signed, game-worn cleats.”

It’s not lost on Bortolini that not too long ago he was the young kid looking up to football players and now he’s got kids looking up to him.

Bortolini is appreciative of every coach he’s ever had and everyone who has supported him along the way, including the contingent of family members and friends who regularly made the trek to Madison and elsewhere in the Big Ten to see him play with the Badgers.

While the destination is unknown, one thing is for certain: One NFL team is going to have a new pocket of fans along the Lake Michigan shoreline by the end of this weekend.

“It’s really great to have the full support of the community,” Bortolini said. “Being from Kewaunee, you really feel like the whole town and the whole county has your back, and they’re all supporting you and cheering you on. It’s really cool. You go anywhere and people are excited to talk about it, and I’m more than happy to sit down and talk about what I’m going through and take the time to say thank you. It really takes a village, a lot of people to get me to the place that I’m at today. I couldn’t be more grateful and thankful for that kind of support.”

Yet it’s all Ron LeCloux needs to see the big picture taking place in front of him.

LeCloux has used the viewfinder on his trusty Nikon camera to capture photos of about 900 athletic events for the Luxemburg-Casco School District over the past 20 years.

He's pretty much seen and covered everything over that time in battling all the different elements Mother Nature can provide in his pursuit of the perfect image.

This Thursday LeCloux will undoubtedly have to hold back some tears as he gets the opportunity to take the photos he has dreamed about for a long time as his beloved Spartans take the football field at Camp Randall Stadium for the first time.

“If Ron were to bleed, he’d bleed maroon and gold,” L-C football coach Neil Seering said. “He epitomizes everything that is right and true about being a Spartan. Ron’s servant leadership and dedication through his photography, faith, and friendship for our communities and its families will live on in our hearts and minds forever.”

Framing up the sea of maroon and gold filling the stands in Madison is something LeCloux always believed would happen one day, as he usually referenced the scenario with a “when” instead of an “if” over his years on the sideline.

Being there to witness L-C on the big stage among the best teams in the state is a blessing LeCloux isn’t taking for granted, especially after a ruptured colon three years ago nearly took his life.

“It’s not scary. It’s beyond scary and terrified,” said LeCloux about going to the doctor in December 2020 for what he thought was kidney stones and instead being told he needed emergency surgery done.

“You get to a point where your whole body and mindset is I’m either going to see God in a couple hours or these people are going to save my life. The total trust in your body leaves. It’s the strangest experience I’ve ever had in my life.”

LeCloux said it took about 30 months before he started to truly feel like himself again. His recovery wouldn’t have been possible without his loving wife, Kathy, right by his side.

“It felt like you’re walking out of a cave and you see the light, but as far as you walk in a given day before you have to sit down and rest that opening still looks the same size,” he said. “It was extremely painful. I cannot describe what it felt like. It was almost debilitating, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me from doing what I do. I felt guilty not being there for the kids.”

LeCloux is a true testament to the football team’s current mantra of a “Brotherhood of Belief” in not wanting to let anyone in the community down. It’s the reason why his return to the sidelines in 2021 was the best medicine for him.

The L-C girls volleyball team captured a third straight WIAA Division 2 state championship that fall. It was a memorable experience for the community LeCloux wasn’t going to miss at the Resch Center, no matter how difficult it was to get there.

“When I shot the girls volleyball state championship matches, Kathy would literally help me out of the truck when I got home because I was in so much pain,” he said.

Overcoming adversity is something that was instilled in LeCloux while playing football for WFCA Hall of Famer Don Rabas at Kewaunee High School.

Not only did LeCloux learn life lessons from Rabas, but he also gained an early inspiration for photography as well from when Marvin Bins of the Luxemburg News would come to practices and games.

“It was almost like on Field of Dreams, like where did this guy come from?,” said LeCloux, a 1977 KHS graduate. “The reason I do what I do for as long as I do is I always remembered the kindness from (Bins) and what he did for our team. Be kind and do stuff for kids. It’s going to make an impact on their life.”

LeCloux worked various jobs throughout his life as he watched his daughter, Erin, and son, Eric, grow up in the blink of an eye. It was a joy for him to see his son take an interest in football as well and play for L-C in the early 2000s.

It was around this time that LeCloux discovered he had two conditions.

He was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a rare type of kidney disease. While difficult to deal with at times, various medications helped him keep this under control for the most part over the past 20 years.

The other condition LeCloux caught wind of in the years following Eric’s graduation in 2004 wasn’t a bad thing, but did change his life as he got the shutter-bug itch in taking up photography for the first time.

LeCloux got his start on the Spartans’ sideline in 2005, when former head coach Pete Kline eventually invited him to ride the team bus for road games.

By the following year that manifested to LeCloux to spreading his coverage to other sports at the high school for all levels and eventually the middle school levels, too.

“They just bring me up,” LeCloux said about photographing L-C’s student-athletes.

“I read an article about people that heal their illnesses by volunteerism. I told Kathy what I’m starting to do I think is good for my health. Volunteering makes me feel good, and I’ve got that happy place. I’ve seen the impact it has had on these players, but their families and little kids and how they look up to the high school kids. It’s this cycle. How you can create a really good environment just by volunteering.”

Since he lives just north of the schools, it’s not a long trek for LeCloux to get out to games. It has been a labor of love as his time commitment doesn’t just consist of shooting at the athletic event itself, but also spending just as many hours going through photos deep into the night.

It's not uncommon for LeCloux to be burning the midnight oil in his office with his Yorkie dogs sleeping by his side. He can’t thank his wife enough for supporting him in pursuing his passion for photography.

“You can’t do this without a strong spouse by your side,” said LeCloux, who received the Spartan Spirit Award in 2019.

Becoming a skilled photographer took years of patience and experimenting for LeCloux, who will tell you he is still learning about the craft to this day.

Due to the success of many of the teams at L-C, he gotten to shoot photos at some of Wisconsin’s biggest venues, like the UW Field House, Kohl Center and Resch Center.

LeCloux has captured championship moments and heartbreaking losses in the process. As tough as the latter can be to swallow in the moment for the young men and women competing, LeCloux is always there with unwavering support and a reminder that the wins and losses are really minor outcomes in the big picture of life.

While on the surface his photos showcase student-athletes competing in sports, LeCloux can see bright futures for the young people in them as they go on to pursue various careers and different walks of life, whether they move far away or stay close to home.

Overall, he hopes they all become good, kind people and make a positive impact on society.

“Ron LeCloux is a true staple of Luxemburg-Casco Spartan Football,” said Newton Smerchek, a 2013 L-C alum.

“He has been doing so much more for the program than just (photos). Whether it is the positive comments, the little coaching points from what he saw while taking a photo, or wanting to show you he got your amazing play on camera, Ron has been a huge piece in helping L-C football be where it is today.”

After years of passing on words of wisdom in being a grandfather-like figure to hundreds of student-athletes, LeCloux takes great joy today in being a grandfather to his own three young grandchildren.

He's making the most of the time with them as he knows the little ones will grow up all too fast, and he hopes to be able to capture them with his camera playing sports one day.

As for this Thursday, it’s only appropriate that one of the best photographers in the state will finally get to shoot at one of the state’s biggest football venues.

It’s also appropriate that football is a game of inches, because LeCloux knows from his unique viewpoint that it’s the little things that matter most in life.

"Ron LeCloux has been our neighbor, our friend, and is a part of all of our family memories,” Seering said. “He has given his time selflessly to all of us here at Luxemburg-Casco. Ron has captured some of the most memorable moments and yet has also given us those moments that we may have never seen if not for him. The smiles, that hug, the triumphs, the heartbreak … of our players, their teammates, the coaches, all of our teams for so many years.”

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Wrightstown

The Tigers traveled about 500 miles roundtrip and beat Baldwin-Woodville 23-6 to advance to the D4 state quarterfinals. Quincy Klister and Ben Jaeger combined for 259 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the win.

Tyler Blanchard, Coleman: The junior rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns as the No. 6-seeded Cougars upset No. 2 Manawa for another road playoff win in advancing to the D6 state quarterfinals.

Isaiah Gash, Bay Port: The senior rushed for 315 yards and four touchdowns to power the Pirates to the D1 state quarterfinals.

Mason Karl, Denmark: The senior recorded an area-high 17 tackles, a forced fumble and a sack as the Vikings held top-ranked Kiel to a season-low point total in a D4 loss.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Coleman

The Cougars, a No. 6 seed, won 40-0 at Bonduel, a No. 3 seed, in a WIAA Division 6 first-round playoff game. It was Coleman’s fourth straight shutout and avenged a 13-8 loss to Bonduel in Week 1.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Ryan Carmichael, Kewaunee: The senior helped the Storm rally for a 36-35 victory over Omro in a D5 game, scoring the go-ahead points on a 2-point conversion with 28 seconds remaining. Carmichael rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns in addition to passing for 286 yards and two touchdowns.

Connor Duffy, Gibraltar: The senior recorded 19 tackles, two sacks and an interception in a 30-28 win at Suring in an 8-player playoff game. Duffy came up with a sack to stall Suring’s last drive of the game.

Quincy Klister, Wrightstown: The junior rushed for 111 yards and made a team-high 14 tackles in the Tigers 20-7 victory over Little Chute in a D4 game.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Bay Port

The Pirates shutout Pulaski, 42-0, to win their fourth straight Fox River Classic Conference title and their 36th consecutive conference game. Isaiah Gash rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns, while the defense posted its sixth shutout of the season.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Tanor Bortolini, Kewaunee: The senior recorded 13 tackles, including 10 solo stops, to help the Storm upend Peshtigo to win a second straight MONLPC-Large title.

Jordon Deringer, Algoma: The senior rushed for 167 yards and three touchdowns in addition to make 10 tackles an interception for the Wolves, who improved to 8-1 with a 32-0 shutout over Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah.

Quincy Klister, Wrightstown: The junior rushed for the deciding touchdown in the fourth quarter of a 30-22 win over Luxemburg-Casco and made 12 tackles on defense.

Mitchell Manns, Oconto Falls: The senior rushed for 62 yards, caught a 99-yard touchdown pass and recorded a team-high 10 tackles to power the Panthers to their second straight win to end the season.

Sam Nooyen and Luke Schroeder, Ashwaubenon: The receivers combined to score four touchdowns and account for 182 yards of offense in the Jaguars’ 31-23 victory over De Pere. Nooyen made nine catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns, while Schroeder caught a touchdown and rushed in another.

OFFENSIVE LINE OF THE WEEK: G.B. Southwest

The Trojans averaged 5.8 yards per carry in rushing for 234 yards and totaling 403 yards of offense in a 34-6 win over Sheboygan North.

DEFENSE OF THE WEEK: Coleman

The MONLPC-Small champion posted its third straight shutout and fourth this season in a 35-0 win over Rosholt.

Mitchell Manns, Oconto Falls: The senior recorded an area-high 21 tackles, including 10 solo stops, to lead the Panthers to a 20-12 win over Marinette.

Taejon Richard, G.B. Southwest: The senior rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown in addition to making eight tackles in a win at Notre Dame Academy.

Peyton VanDeHei, Seymour: The junior made 12 tackles and an interception in addition to throwing a touchdown in a tough 10-7 loss for the Thunder.

OFFENSIVE LINE OF THE WEEK: Denmark

The Vikings averaged 7.4 yards per carry in rushing for 206 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Clintonville to become playoff eligible. Denmark has the NEC’s leading passer (Reece Piontek), receiver (Seth Alexander) and second-leading rusher (Gabe Wertel) thanks to the big guys up front.

DEFENSE OF THE WEEK: West De Pere

The Phantoms held Wrightstown to 78 yards of offense and only 18 rushing yards in a nonconference victory. Cody Cavil made seven tackles, including a tackle for loss in the win.

The Vikings used a balanced attack to upend Luxemburg-Casco 42-28. Reece Piontek threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns, while Gabe Wertel rushed for 182 yards and three touchdowns to power Denmark to its first win over L-C since 2013.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Cody Cavil and Sam Mommaerts, West De Pere: Cavil recorded eight tackles, a sack, 2½ tackles for loss and returned a fumble for a touchdown in the Phantoms’ shutout of Seymour, while Mommaerts averaged 14.9 yards per carry in rushing for a season-high 179 yards and four touchdowns.

Damion Henrichs, G.B. West: The senior led the Green Bay area with 125 receiving yards this week, making six catches, including a touchdown for the Wildcats.

Max Meeuwsen, Bay Port: The Naval Academy recruit made six tackles, including three sacks in a win over Ashwaubenon, which was the Pirates’ fifth shutout of the season. Meeuwsen has 17 tackles for loss and 7½ sacks this season.

Connor Shefchik, G.B. Preble: The junior forced three turnovers in a 28-14 win against Notre Dame Academy. Shefchik recovered a fumble and recorded two interceptions, including one he returned 70 yards for a touchdown. He also rushed for 42 yards in the win.

Jeremy Van Zeeland, Wrightstown: The senior led the Green Bay area with 222 rushing yards on 17 carries, including three touchdowns in the Tigers’ victory over Marinette.

OFFENSIVE LINE OF THE WEEK: Algoma

The Wolves averaged 8.6 yards per carry in rushing for 421 yards and four touchdowns in a 46-22 homecoming victory over Gibraltar.

DEFENSE OF THE WEEK: Pulaski

TEAM OF THE WEEK: G.B. Preble

The Hornets won a 28-21 overtime contest at Green Bay Southwest in a Fox River Classic Conference game. Connor Shefchik rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning score, while Cole Kingston made an interception in overtime to end the game.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Josh Blount, West De Pere: The junior quarterback put up video-game numbers in a 56-42 victory over Menasha. Blount rushed for 393 yards and six touchdowns in addition to throwing for another score to put the Phantoms in the driver’s seat to win a share of a third straight Bay Conference title.

Matthew Cravillion, Luxemburg-Casco: The 6-foot-3 senior threw for 161 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 107 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Oconto Falls. Cravillion also made six tackles on defense.

Jordon Deringer and Carter Zimmerman, Algoma: The duo combined for 257 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, while each made eight tackles and an interception in a 52-10 victory over Sturgeon Bay.

Spencer Evenson, Sevastopol: The junior rushed for 128 yards, caught a touchdown and made a team-high 12 tackles in a 16-6 victory over Gillett.

Javonnee Szymanski, G.B. Southwest: The 6-foot-4 junior had a monster game in an overtime loss against Green Bay Preble. Szymanski accounted for all three of the Trojans’ touchdown, making six receptions for 148 yards and two touchdowns in addition to returning a kickoff for a touchdown.

OFFENSIVE LINE OF THE WEEK: Seymour

The Thunder averaged 6.7 yards per carry in rushing for 255 yards and four touchdowns in a 28-6 victory over Waupaca behind the blocking of Paul Treml, Owen Geurts, Kaleb Shufelt, Jacob VerVoort, Mike Banker and Aiden Linsmeyer.

DEFENSE OF THE WEEK: Wrightstown

The Tigers held Little Chute to a season-low point total in a 7-3 victory in a North Eastern Conference game. Jeremy Van Zeeland led the way with 14 tackles and an interception, while Joe Hella made two sacks and Caleb Ritter recorded eight tackles and a sack.

The Red Devils beat Green Bay West 16-6 in the 114th meeting between the rival schools. Brandon Munoz made two interceptions in the win, while Riley Jensen threw two touchdown passes.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Brock Egnarski, Pulaski: The senior recorded 9 tackles, including 8 solo stops, in addition to making two interceptions and recovering a fumble to help the Red Raiders’ keep their undefeated record intact with a 12-10 victory over Notre Dame Academy.

Brendan Kilpatrick, G.B. East: The senior made 10 tackles, six of which were solo stops, three sacks and forced three fumbles in the Red Devils’ win over Green Bay West.

Tyler Kroll, Southern Door: The senior tied a school record by making three interceptions in a victory over Oconto. Kroll also caught five passes for 66 yards and made all five of his extra-point attempts.

Reece Piontek, Denmark: The junior completed 9-of-13 passes for 242 yards and three touchdowns the Vikings’ win over Marinette.

Tyler Rasmussen & Nick Metzler, G.B. Southwest: The Trojans scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams in a 21-0 shutout over Sheboygan South. Rasmussen, a senior, returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown, while Metzler, a junior, returned an interception for 35 yards for a score to give Southwest a 14-0 halftime lead.

OFFENSIVE LINE OF THE WEEK: G.B. Preble

The Hornets produced 451 yards of offense in a victory over Sheboygan North. Preble averaged 12.8 yards per carry in racking up 346 rushing yards in a victory over Sheboygan North.

DEFENSE OF THE WEEK: Bay Port

The Pirates posted a 56-0 shutout of De Pere for their third shutout of the season. Bay Port recorded six sacks and allowed only 51 yards of offense, including -56 rushing yards.

Junior Micky Kiernan kicked a 33-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to propel the Jaguars to a 17-14 victory over Sheboygan South. Connor Ramage rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown to help Ashwaubenon remain undefeated on the season.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

James Arett, Notre Dame Academy: The senior carried the load for the Trtions at De Pere, totaling 241 yards on 37 carries, including a 69-yard touchdown run.

Ethan Hohol, De Pere: The 6-foot-3 senior caught five passes for 49 yards and a touchdown in addition to recovering a fumble in the second half to lead the Redbirds to a 10-7 victory over Notre Dame.

Alex Laughlin, Gibraltar: Caught five passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns in addition to making 17 tackles and forcing a fumble in the Vikings’ 28-24 victory over Wabeno/Laona. Laughlin caught a 66-yard touchdown with 4 minutes remaining for the go-ahead score in the game.

Ben Redlin, Pulaski: The Red Raiders improved to 4-0 with the help of another strong performance from the junior, who rushed for a season-high 201 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns.

Reece Worachek, Luxemburg-Casco: The senior amassed 45 carries in totaling 268 yards and two touchdowns in a three-point loss against Freedom.

OFFENSIVE LINE OF THE WEEK: Kewaunee

Owen Kudick rushed for 279 yards and four touchdowns in a victory over Crivitz behind the blocking of Tanor Bortolini, Chad Randolph, Mitchell Kinjerski, Aidan DeGrave and Cain Hall. Bortolini is the only senior in the group, while Kinjerski, DeGrave and Hall are sophomores.

DEFENSE OF THE WEEK: Algoma

The Wolves allowed only 103 yards, forced three turnovers and recorded a sack in a 42-0 shutout win at Gillett. Hunter Stoller led the team with eight tackles.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Kewaunee

Senior Ryan Carmichael found sophomore Ben Heim for a 10-yard touchdown to give the Storm a 21-18 victory over Coleman. It was the second straight week Kewaunee rallied for a victory by scoring the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Seth Alexander, Denmark: The senior made five receptions for 157 yards and caught two touchdowns, while also rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown to lead the Vikings to a 32-14 win over Oconto Falls for their first victory of the season.

Nick Baudhuin, Southern Door: The junior rushed for 403 yards on 37 carries and scored six touchdowns in the Eagles 39-14 victory over Crivitz. Baudhuin broke Jim Flanigan’s single-game school record for rushing yards from 1989 and tied Flanigan’s single-game record for touchdowns.

Ben Jaeger, Wrightstown: The senior rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Tigers (3-0) to a 26-24 victory over Fox Valley Lutheran in a North Eastern Conference matchup.

Connor Ramage, Ashwaubenon: The junior rushed for a team-high 99 yards and caught six passes for 75 yards and a touchdown to help the Jaguars stay undefeated with a 24-13 victory over Green Bay Preble.

Reece Worachek, Luxemburg-Casco: The senior averaged 7.4 yards per carry in totaling 155 yards and three rushing touchdowns in addition to catching a 68-yard touchdown to power the Spartans to a 31-8 victory over Marinette.

OFFENSIVE LINE OF THE WEEK: Pulaski

The Red Raiders averaged 6.7 yards per carry in totaling 267 rushing yards and five touchdowns in a 41-0 shutout over Sheboygan North. Pulaski recorded 346 yards of offense behind the blocking of Logan Kobus, Zach Berndt, Max Steinbrecher, Bennett Sheedy, Nick Rasmussen, tight end Dalton Winter and fullback J.J. Szymanski.

DEFENSE OF THE WEEK: De Pere

The Redbirds forced five turnovers and scored two defensive touchdowns in a 31-6 victory over Sheboygan South. Sam Hafner made 16 tackles and return a fumble for a touchdown, while Bennett Spaeth returned an interception for a touchdown to help De Pere win its first game of the season.

Every year she plants and upkeeps one of the biggest ones you’ll ever see.

Her greatest joy is seeing the fruits – mostly vegetables in this instance – of her labor and sharing them for others to enjoy.

It’s her gift.

I believe everyone has a gift they can share.

That’s what I’ve always tried to do through my writing, photos or videos.

I’m a storyteller at heart, and I started this website over two years ago because I didn’t want my gift to go to waste just because it wasn’t my job to be a reporter anymore.

I’ve enjoyed capturing moments and memories for high school athletes, and sharing them with you here.

This place has been my creative escape as I transitioned to a different line of work to make a living and gain the skills needed to open new doors for myself.

I’m excited to share that on Monday I’ll begin a new job as the Communications and Marketing Specialist at Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay.

Words can’t describe how much I’m looking forward to this opportunity.

This is exactly the type of position I was hoping to land after my days at the Green Bay Press-Gazette came to an end a couple years ago.

I’ve learned a lot in dusting myself off and getting back up to carve a path to get to this point.

I’d like to thank Kim, Melissa and Teri of UnitedOne Credit Union for giving me an opportunity when nobody else would. Manitowoc wasn’t where I wanted it to be, but it’s exactly the place where I needed to be.

I’ve been fortunate to share an office the last two years with one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Annie is a fellow farm kid and a tremendous graphic designer. Thank you for teaching me about the marketing world and even more about life.

Starting Preps Agenda has definitely been one of the best decisions of my life.

It has allowed me to stay in touch with so many great individuals and continue to meet new ones.

Dayna, thank you for always being at my side and encouraging me to pursue my passion. I’d be lost without you.

My goal when I started this website was to find a niche and build a community that will appreciate the coverage I can provide for football, wrestling, and track and field. I think I’ve done that.

I’m not sure what the future holds for my passion project here, but this is not an ending.

I’ll do what I can. Right now, that will probably be limited because I’ve been burning the candle pretty hot at both ends.

In the past month, I’ve posted photo galleries, videos and articles from 15 football teams’ preseason practices. I’ve had photo galleries from eight different games through the first two weeks of the season.

I personally feel it’s some of the best content I’ve ever produced. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

There is just something about those early practices and the start of the new season that I’ve always found special in documenting.

Although I try to act as just a fly on the wall when I visit practices, I appreciate the incredible access coaches give me.

For example, Luxemburg-Casco coach Dillon Maney mistakenly gave me a wrong time for a practice. I arrived at the end when I thought there would be about 45 minutes remaining.

Maney extended practice for another series for me to get some photographs. I didn’t ask him to do that. He just did.

It meant a lot, just like the countless letters of recommendation individuals wrote for me. I appreciate that people genuinely care about the person behind the byline or lens.

When I informed West De Pere coach Jack Batten about my new job, the veteran coach grasped me by the head, like he would with one of his players, and shouted with excitement for me.

I believe I’ve showed the difference one person can make if they are passionate about something.

I bought my first DSLR camera two years ago because I knew I would be a one-man shop in starting up this venture and wanted to learn photography.

I initially shot photos for about the first quarter of a game and then went back to my clipboard to keep statistics because I thought the camera prohibited my view of capturing what was happening in the game.

I was wrong.

I’ve since gained a greater appreciation of how much of the game you can see through the lens. It’s amazing to see plays develop frame by frame and get a true understanding of where technique can take over to allow a 180-pound nose tackle knock a 250-pound guard to the ground.

People often tell me there is less coverage of high school sports today than there was in the past.

I’d argue against that.

The online world we live in has allotted so much more. Just think about all the different photo galleries that are posted to social media by parents or community members.

There are a large assortment of games or events that are being streamed online, allowing family members and friends from across the country to watch.

There are multiple websites or apps available to enter and distribute statistical information.

That’s in addition to the traditional media outlets, which continue to do a tremendous job with the resources they have to spotlight high school athletics. Given there is an NFL team in our market, we are truly spoiled with the coverage they still dedicate to high school sports.

You’re probably wondering what’s next for my Preps Agenda?

I’ll be photographing the Notre Dame versus Bay Port game Friday because it’s the next game I had marked on my schedule.

I’ve always mapped out the first three weeks of the season to try to see as many teams as possible. The Tritons will be the 14th different local team I’ll see play this season.

However, I plan to cut back how much content I’ll produce in the immediate future as I turn the page to a new chapter in life. I’ll do what I can, but I don’t want to ever set any unrealistic expectations.

I’m sorry to say that one of the things I will no longer be posting is “Standings in the Stands.” The student sections that have participated in this have been awesome. I’ve been honored to spotlight your passion and creativity because you are so important to making Friday nights special. Thank you.

I would like to pursue some bigger projects at some point in the future, including pieces that would require months or years to put together.
